A tradition to savour
Törggelen
When the leaves turn colourful and the grape harvest is in, the loveliest time of autumn begins in South Tyrol: Törggele season!
But what exactly is this centuries-old tradition all about? Originally, winegrowers and merchants would meet in the autumn in the tasting rooms (known as ‘Torggln’ – from the Latin ‘torquere’, meaning to press grapes) to sample the year’s young wine, the ‘Sweet’ or ‘New’.
Today, Törggelen means one thing above all else: a cosy get-together in good company after an atmospheric autumn walk. In traditional farm taverns, only home-cooked dishes are served – from homemade Schlutzkrapfen to sweet doughnuts, and the highlight to finish is chestnuts (known as ‘Keschtn’ in the South Tyrolean dialect) served with wine and apple juice.
